4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

For my media project the target audience we wanted to achieve was late teens to middle aged women and men. The fact that the audience can be so wide is because the characters in our film are of a wide span of ages. Mother, Father, Daughter and the killer- the killer is around the age of 20. The film is featured around a family, therefore the audience can relate. The audience for my product would also be one who would like Thriller/Horror films as our film has got a lot of blood and gore in due to the killing of the family. The fact that it is not just a typical Thriller, there is a deep story to our film, and if we were to make it a feature length film then the audience would see the plot unravel and understand the killing of the family. We wanted to draw the audience in with our opening scene, we wanted them to ask themselves, why are they dead? Is the person in the hoodie the killer? When did it happen? 

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

In our media project we decided to attract the audience by using the story line to the full. The opening sequence clearly shows that a family has been murdered. However, we do not know whether the only person alive in the sequence is the killer, we leave the audience questioning themselves. We attract the audience using Mise-en scene, with the high amount of blood, and the knife that the “killer” is seen spinning. The clever camera angles we used also helped us address the audience to where each victim had been hurt when killed. We used a lot of close ups to help create tension and also wide shots to help establish where it was for the audience. All the shots we used helped the audience to try and have an insight of what had gone on. The use of sound we used also would help attract the audience. The sound was very eerie and creepy; it helped create the scene, keeping the audience on their seats.  

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Through the process of constructing this product I have learnt a lot about technologies, especially when using the camera in the filming process and also the program we used to edit our final product.  I’ve learnt how to edit the film, how to speed up film, slow down film, and also how to add titles to the product. After completing our product I now feel more confident in my editing skills. When we filmed our product I learnt how to focus the camera in which to make the vision clearer. During the whole process when using technologies I leant something new along the way every time we used the program to edit and during the filming process.

Films and the conventions of opening sequences of thriller's...

PSYCHO: 1960: CER: 15: DIRECTOR:Alfred Hitchcock
In the opening title for the thriller, "Psycho", we get a hint that throughout the film we should be reading between the lines, as throughout the sequence we get a number of swipe edits to lines. Throughout the opening sequence we are shown the title and the titles and nothing more. 

The sequence begins with silence, while the production company is being shown, "A Paramount release". As it fades to black we are hit with a sudden sound of violins, which give a very sharp effect. The music flows with a series of simple white bars to bring in the titles and escort them back out again. These simple white bars do give of a dramatic effect as they are edited with fast pace, which go with the sound of the intense violins which are played throughout. Everything that we see in the opening sequence (OPENING TITLES*) is in black and white, and with the tense sound of the violins and the sharp edits of the white bars between titles, it all gives us as the audience a very high state of anticipation and anxiety, which fulfils the thriller genre. These titles are from what would be a long shot, and never seem to get closer.

In the opening sequence  of "Hollow Man" , we first see a black background, with a title that fades in saying, in fluorescent green, "columbia pictures presents" , also, when this title fades in we begin to hear the sound of a very quiet constant hum, then harp playing the same tune and violins that later progress, then  "a douglas wick production", which then edits to a fade in of a  fluorescent  green background, then fades the last title. We then begin to see floating  particles, which too are of a green colour. It is as if we as the audience are looking through a  microscope into a Petri Dish. We then begin to see  green letters float in from the back, which all flow  in time with the music. The letters form words, of which are the names of the costume designer ETC.   As well as this, we get a black font of the same titles next to the formed floaty letters.  We get the name of the film the this sequence, "HOLLOW MAN". 


This opening title sequence is very clear and simple, however, the constant sound of humming and violins ETC keep a flowing pace and a eerie vibe to the sequence, keeping us in suspense to wonder and question our selves, "why are we in a Petri Dish?".

The Genre- Thriller
The Genre Thriller is a broad genre of literature and film that uses suspense, tension and excitements the main elements.
There is usually a very high state of anticipation, anxiety surprise etc in the Thriller Genre; this is used to keep the viewers on their feet, and to want to know why there is such a high state of anticipation, anxiety surprise ETC.

There are a number of sub genre's  to the Thriller Genre:  Conspiracy thriller, Crime thriller, Disaster thriller, Legal thriller, Medical thriller, Mystery thriller, Political thriller, Psychological thriller, Supernatural thriller and Techno thriller 
Usually in Thriller's there is always a crime that has taken place, which could be mass murder, terrorism ETC. Within the film the hero takes a journey to discover whom the villain is, defeats him/her/IT, and always saves others or loses others in the process. 

The film Industry is mainly dominated by Hollywood. A production company that dominates other's is an American one, 20th Century Fox. They have produced a number of Thriller's inculding "Taken", which involves a daughter getting kidnapped, with her Father doing all he can to get her back. The actor that plays the Father is Liam Neeson.


Main props that are found in thriller films are guns and knifes. And location wise thrillers usally take place in day to day suburbs and cities.

FINAL PIECE

EDITING


We then began to edit our short sequence the following Monday in lesson time, we used the programme Adobe Premiere Pro. We managed to add eerie music over our clip, and also a sound affect at the end of it. The following Friday, we then finished our editing. (Today) We have added dissolves to the sequence, so it flows more, otherwise it would be too jumpy from one cut to the other. We also edited a title on before the sequence begins; we named it "The Blackout". We all split the editing so that we all did fair amounts.

We then filmed the following Friday that week. Katie filmed, and Me, Charlotte and Lauren were the actors. We managed to get all the filming done in the lesson time, it took us about an hour and a half. We managed to include everything that we planned. We used natural light, and also used the reflectors and defusers to help bring light up in certain area's we needed it in.


We will certainly make sure that in the next task all of us will get a chance to film, which will hopefully give us a desirable grade.

Planning

Planning


In our first steps of planning our Preliminary task we discussed where our 30 second film sequence would be set. I thought of the idea of it being in a science lab, or just with science materials in a normal room laid about. We decided it to be in a science lab. We then started to make up story boards, including the different camera angles. After, we needed to fit in our dialogue. The dialogue was between Charlotte and I, there was no dialogue from Lauren. We then decided what costumes were needed. Lauren who was playing the "creep" would wear all black, including a black coat, with a large collar, to add effect to her creepy character. Charlotte and I would wear normal day to day clothes. We discussed the lighting to be low key, to help give an eerie effect to our short sequence.

The story:

The short clip takes place in a science lab, Charlotte (me) had left her pencil case in there after a class. She goes back to find that there is a random girl (Charlotte Tomlinson) in there, with "your next" over her hands. While Charlotte is talking to the girl, who doesn't seem to talk back, she does not realise that there is a black figured person (Lauren) who followed her in there. The idea is that Charlotte is the black figured person's next victim; hence "you’re next".

We made sure that our planning would include the following for in our filming: Match on action, eye line match, 180 degree role etc.
